'The Seven Golden Rules of the Favor Economy'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

In Chicago’s insular power-broker scene, perhaps due to the history of Machine politics, the most powerful currency often wasn't money—it was the favor, quietly traded and rarely forgotten. “The true masters of the game,” I argued, “were those who understood when to give without expecting and when to collect without asking.” My article mapped out the unwritten codes behind these exchanges, revealing a system where influence circulated through introductions more than invoices. In an ecosystem where access was power and reciprocity was the operating logic, the favor economy didn’t just oil the machine—it was the machine.
