'The Not-for-Sale Strategy'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

In 2004, a curious shift was unfolding across the commercial gallery world: shows packed with museum-level work, but little of it for sale. From Riflemaker’s “Colour My World” in London to PaceWildenstein’s “Logical Conclusions” in New York, dealers were mounting ambitious, academically framed exhibitions that blurred the line between market and museum — often featuring artists they didn’t even represent. “We wanted to do a show that felt like it came from an institution, but with more edge,” Marc Glimcher noted at the time, signaling a deeper strategy at play. In an overheated market, where scarcity drives value and credibility is currency, these not-for-sale shows weren’t a retreat from commerce — they were its next evolution.
