'The 1995 Chicago Underground Press Conference'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

The 1995 Underground Press Conference revealed a subculture caught between fierce independence and the temptations of mainstream recognition, with zine makers simultaneously railing against the establishment and plotting ways to reach larger audiences. The conference was less a coherent movement than a volatile ecosystem of personalities, rivalries and competing definitions of what it meant to “sell out,” from direct-mail campaigns and corporate tools repurposed for underground ends to spectacular acts of provocation. Beneath the chaos, however, the lit-sale zone showed what really mattered: Zines functioned as a barter currency, connecting editors and readers through intensely personal networks that existed outside conventional publishing. The contradictions were ultimately the point, as the underground confronted the uncomfortable reality that ambition, money and visibility could both threaten its independence and give it the means to survive.
