'Skittish Sales and Some Successes at Cultura'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

In the wake of the World Trade Center attacks, the 2002 Cultura antiquities fair tried to hold steady, but even strong booths and fine weather couldn’t mask the hesitancy of buyers — or the fair’s deeper structural fragility. “The stands are beautiful... and the weather’s been beautiful,” quipped pre-Columbian dealer David Bernstein, capturing the mood of a fair where atmosphere often outpaced sales. Despite hopeful signals in the modern design section, Cultura quietly closed a few years later. Lesson: Even great historical objects can’t support a fair without a future-facing strategy
