Synopsis
My scene-setter essay to a package of articles on art x tech that I guest-edited for CNN Style. For decades, I wrote, digital art had lived in an uneasy exile: too tech-obsessed for museums, too conceptually thin for technologists, a “succession of stillborn children,” as one observer put it. But by 2017, I wrote, "The digital work coming out of artists’ studios – often just their laptops - shows a clear shift, dissolving the boundaries between “the art world” and “digital art”' I was, perhaps, optimistic about market adoption (NVM the NFTs), but not when it came to institutions and biennials.
