Synopsis
Before agents became a thing in the art world, and nomadic galleries became more common, galleries were already asking themselves why they were paying rent on spaces that were receiving so few visitors after the shows opened. So, why? Because artists want to show in real space. And because, as noted by then-gallerist (and future Gawker star) Choire Sicha: “It gives collectors confidence in you, even if many of them are too lazy actually to bother seeing your shows.” Facts!
