Synopsis
I loved this Thomas Demand show at Peter Kilchmann in Zurich. What looked like documentary scenes were in fact meticulous fabrications: every photocopier, sponge, or sand dune was built from paper and cardboard, then lit, photographed, and destroyed. Based on found press images, Demand’s works hovered “three levels removed from reality,” offering a visual sleight of hand that turned documentary flatness into conceptual depth.
