'Switzerland Hosts Biggest Ever Show of Chinese Contemporary Art'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

There were no galleries — just apartments and studios - when Uli Sigg started collecting in China. So his landmark exhibition Mahjong offered Western audiences a uniquely in-depth look at Chinese contemporary art from 1979 to 2005, drawn from the vast collection he built while traveling across China as the Swiss Ambassador. With over 300 works organized around themes like Maoism, Consumerism, and The Body, the show reflected Sigg’s long-standing role as both collector and cultural bridge. More than a survey, Mahjong made clear how one outsider’s commitment helped shape the way legacy Chinese art both at home and abroad.
